SHUTE, Neville [/ size] (pseudo Nevil Shute Norway) (12/17/1899 - 12/12/1960) English novelist and aircraft engineer, better known for his realistic works. Born in the suburbs of London, graduated from Bayall College, Oxford and the Royal Military Academy, London; during the first world war he served as a private, the second world war he spent in the reserve of the navy (with the rank of lieutenant commander); worked in the aviation industry (as a specialist in airships). Since 1950 (when for health reasons Shute was forced to move to Australia) he has been a professional writer. Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. SF elements are present in two of Shute`s pre-war novels - " What Happened to the Corbetts " [ What Happened to the Corbetts [/ color] ] (1939; dr. - " Disobedience " [ Ordeal [/ color] ]) and " Ancient captivity " [ An Old Captivity [/ color] ] (1940); the first is a description of war in the near future, and the hero of the second, being in a state of coma, mentally travels to the time of the Vikings. The novel " On the shore " [ On the Beach [/ color] ] (1957; rus. 1991; 1992 - " On the last bank "), and even more so - its adaptation in 1959 by S. Kramer. The action of this psychological and striking in its "realism" novel unfolds in Australia, which, by a happy coincidence, was not "touched" by the outbreak of a global nuclear war; however, the population of the last stronghold of civilization is still doomed: in the end, the radioactive cloud reaches the shores of the continent. The realistic novel " No Highway " [ No Highway [/ color] ] (1948) prophetically indicated the later confirmed cause of many plane crashes - metal fatigue; filmed in 1951 as " There is no highway in the air ". Also related to SF is the utopia " Dry " [ In the Wet [/ color] ] (1953), in which Australia becomes the leading by 2000 power of the British Commonwealth of Nations, socialism completely disappeared from the face of the Earth, but the ideas of the monarchy and the imperial spirit triumphed. The novel "Same as Alice (Inheritance)" (A Town Like Alice), included in the 200 best books of the BBC version, was first published in 1950 (translated into Russian by V. M. Salie). A modest girl who works near London in a firm that produces shoes and leather goods, receives an inheritance and decides to use it to build a well in a Malay village that sheltered her during the war. Once in Malaya, she learns that the Australian who helped a group of English women during their wanderings, in fact, did not die, as she previously believed. The girl goes to Australia, finds this man, marries him and turns a small Australian settlement into a cozy (especially for women) town. For this she had to work hard. Actively getting down to business, the girl first organizes a shoe sewing workshop. It was followed by a cafe, swimming pool, hairdresser. In a dying village, many jobs suddenly appear, local girls no longer leave for big cities, men begin to catch up with them, and ... a new city appears.  Nevil Shute - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nevil_Shute
