Deep in London`s dangerous slums, Victorians transacted their most secret and shameful business. For a price, a man could procure whatever he wanted, but it happened now and then that the price he paid was his life.

Now, in sunless Water Lane, respected solicitor Leighton Duff lies dead, kicked and beaten to death. Beside him lies the barely living body of his son, Rhys. The police cannot fathom these brutal assaults until shrewd investigator William Monk uncovers a connection between them and a series of rapes and beatings of local prostitutes. Then, shockingly, it begins to appear that young Rhys may have killed his own father…

Anne Perry (English Anne Perry ) is a literary pseudonym. Real name - Juliet Marion Hulme . British writer Born in London on 28 October 1938. Her father is Dr. Henry Hulme, a renowned physicist, participated in the British hydrogen bomb program. She studied at various schools, which was associated with frequent family relocations (including several years in New Zealand). On June 22, 1954, together with her friend Pauline Parker, Pauline`s mother, Honora Rieper, was killed by stabbing her 45 times. The brutality of the crime has attracted a lot of attention to the trial over them. Due to their age, the girls were not sentenced to death, five years later they were pardoned and released on the condition that they never meet or contact each other. These events served as the basis for Peter Jackson`s film "Heavenly Creatures" (1994). After her release, Anne Perry returned to England. She worked as a clerk, salesman, flight attendant, taxi dispatcher, insurance agent. None of these jobs really appealed to Ann. She dreamed of becoming a writer, began writing many times, but her first work, The Cater Street Hangman, did not come out until 1979. The time of action of the works of Ann Perry is Victorian England and the time of the First World War. The writer is working on two main series with the main characters - police officers Thomas Pitt and William Monk. A Dangerous Mourning (1991) has sold over 10 million copies and has become the most famous book by the writer. Over the years, Perry`s books have been awarded the Agatha Prize. Lives in Scotland with a dog and five cats. *** Thomas Pitt - NOT "the Queen`s favorite detective"! This is a trick of Russian publishers. The author, a former murderer (albeit served a sentence), is not accepted by the high society of Great Britain.  Detective. Declaration of love.
