A book by John Maddox Roberts

American writer John Maddox Roberts was born in Ohio. Grew up in the states of Texas, California, New Mexico. He lived with his wife in such different places as Scotland, Mexico, Appalachian mountains. After Roberts was expelled from the university in 1967, he joined the army. He served in Vietnam. After returning to civilian life, he decided to become a writer because he considered writing an easy job and thought he could work from the comfort of his home. Only the second assumption turned out to be correct. Roberts` first book was published in 1977. All of his early books were fantastic or historical. In 1990, Roberts published his first detective novel, SPQR. However, the greatest fame was brought to him by the cycle of historical detective stories about Ancient Rome "SPQR", in which today there are 10 novels - the first was published in 1990, while the last - in 2006.

The name of the cycle is the well-known abbreviation "In the Name of the Senate and the People of Rome". The action takes place in the troubled times of the last years of the Republic`s existence, among the characters of the cycle Crassus, Pompey, Caesar, Cicero, Catiline and many other real persons. The hero is a young patrician Decius Metellius, gifted with a sharp mind and the ability to solve mysteries, who constantly gets involved in various unpleasant affairs associated with crimes and conspiracies.
