Young Kitty Charing stands to inherit a vast fortune from her irascible great-uncle Matthew--provided she marries one of her cousins. Kitty is not wholly adverse to the plan, if the right nephew proposes. Unfortunately, Kitty has set her heart on Jack Westruther, a confirmed rake, who seems to have no inclination to marry her anytime soon. In an effort to make Jack jealous, and to see a little more of the world than her isolated life on her great-uncle`s estate has afforded her, Kitty devises a plan. She convinces yet another of her cousins, the honorable Freddy Standen, to pretend to be engaged to her. Her plan would bring her to London on a visit to Freddy`s family and (hopefully) render the elusive Mr. Westruther madly jealous.

Georgette Heyer (Georgette Heyer) August 16, 1902 - July 4, 1974 Reprinted as Stella Martin . She was born in Wimbledon, London. All her life, she avoided publicity in every possible way, never gave interviews and only once responded to fans` letters. “Everything you want to know about my life, you will find in my books,” was her favorite answer. At 19, Georgette wrote The Black Moth for her brother Boris. Georgette`s father persuaded her to finalize the novel, and in 1921 it was published in The Constable. The 1926 novel These Old Shades was published in huge print runs for that time and became a bestseller. Together with her husband, who worked as a mining engineer, Heyer spent several years in Tanganyika and Macedonia. In 1929 they returned to England. After the husband`s firm went bankrupt, they moved to Horham, Sussex. In 1932, the first detective Heyer was released - "Footsteps in the dark" (Footsteps in the dark). This and subsequent novels were written in the classical style. Serial heroes of most of her detectives were Superintendent Hannasyde and Sergeant Hemingway, they investigate crimes in 8 books. In 1942, Heyer and his family returned to London. After the release of the twelfth detective "Unfinished investigation" (Detection unlimited) in 1953, the writer moved away from the detective genre, turning to historical melodramas. To recreate the atmosphere of authenticity of the era (from 1752 to 1825), Heyer and her husband, who helped in her work on novels, collected information about everyday life, etiquette, fashion, clothes, hats, cooking, vocabulary, etc., a lot of scientific - research materials. At the time of her death, Heyer owned over 1000 historical reference books, including rare ones. Heyer`s historical melodramas were very popular and spawned both plagiarists and many followers. She is considered the ancestor of the genre - historical love story, "love story of the Regency era" To protect his copyrights and solve financial problems, Heyer created Heron Enterprises (a limited liability company) in 1950. Subsequently, these rights were bought by Booker-McConnell , which already owned the copyright for the works of Agatha Christie and Ian Flemming at that time ...  Detective. Declaration of love.
