Neal Asher was born in 1961 in Billericay (Essex, England) to a family of teachers. The beginnings of an interest in science fiction and fantasy began to appear in young Asher after reading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. From the age of sixteen, Neil, under the patronage of an English teacher, already began to try his hand at writing stories. After leaving school, Neil worked with his three brothers in a furniture factory, then was sent to the advanced training course “Tech III: Mechanical & amp; Production Engineering ". It was at this time that he again took up his pen and wrote his first book in the fantasy genre, which became the first in a number of Neal`s books that never reached the publisher. Then, at the age of 25, he got a job in a machine-building company, where he was engaged in programming CNC machine tools, after three years he quit, worked as a lawn mower, lumberjack. This kind of occupation left Neal more free time, which allowed him to focus on developing his writing career. Until 2001, the author`s list of published works included only stories published in a number of British science fiction and fantasy magazines, several short stories, and the collections of "The Engineer" and "Runcible Tales". In 2001, Escher`s novel "Gridlinked" was released, initiating the "Ian Cormac" cycle. This was followed by the novels "The Skinner" and "The Line of Polity", which was nominated for a Locus Award in 2004. Of the subsequent works of Neil, the short stories Strood (Locus 2005), Mason`s Rats (Locus 2006), Softly Spoke the Gabbleduck ( Locus and Asimov`s Reader Poll 2006) and the novel Cowl (finalist for the 2006 Philip K. Dick Award). The new novel "Polity Agent" in 2007 was included by the editors of the magazine "Locus" in the list of books recommended for reading. Neil Escher`s works are characterized by hurricane and harsh action with an admixture of black humor, including most of the standard SF elements, and are space operas performed in the tone of cyberpunk. Now Neil is engaged only in writing, in 2007 his novel "Hilldiggers", which is part of the "Polity Universe", is due to be released. Source: http://www.fantlab.ru/autor926
