After graduating from high school, he worked as a clerk on the railway. In 1946 he was drafted into the Royal Air Force, where he was a photographer for the Special Research Department. After demobilization, he studied at the St. Martin and the Royal College of Art. In the fifties, Dayton worked as a steward for a British airline, then as an illustrator in New York and the artistic director of an advertising agency in London. He drew illustrations for magazines, as well as sketches for book covers for various publishers. After the successful publication of his first novel, "The incress file," in 1962, Dayton became a professional writer. Most of his novels are about espionage. In addition, he is the author of historical works, mainly on the Second World War. Dayton is also known for his cookbooks, which he prepared while serving as a waiter.  Detective. Declaration of love.
