Country: USA Born: 1969-05-10 Biography: John Michael Scalzi (born May 10, 1969) is an American writer and online author best known for his novel Doomed to Win, published in January 2005 and nominated for a Hugo Award, as well as his blog Whatever, where he has been writing daily since 1998.

He has also written a number of nonfiction books. Scalzi`s first publication was Doomed to Victory, in which 75-year-old inhabitants of Earth are recruited into the defense forces of human colonies in space. Scalzi noted in an appendix to his book its similarities to Robert Heinlein`s Star Infantry. Doomed to Win was published following its web debut: Scalzi posted the book piece by piece on his website in December 2002, after which Tor Books editor-in-chief Patrick Nielsen Hayden suggested publishing the book. The hardcover edition was published in January 2005.

Doomed to Win was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel in March 2006.

Scalzi`s second published novel was titled Star Agent. The novel was actually written before Doomed to Win (in 1997) and posted online in 1999 by the author for free download. The novel was released in a limited edition in July 2005.

In February 2006, the novel Brigades of Ghosts was released, a sequel to Doomed to Win. 2006 also saw the release of another science fiction novel, Android`s Dream. The Redshirts novel won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in September 2013. Official site: scalzi.com Awards and prizes: Hugo Award, 2006 // Prize. John W.
