Jodi Lynn Picoult (English Jodi Lynn Picoult ) May 19, 1967, New York American writer. Author of 13 New York Times bestselling books. In 2003 she was awarded the New England Bookseller Award for Fiction. Winner of The Margaret Alexander Edwards Award, established by the American Library Association. Her work won the Best Work of the Year award and was nominated for the 2005 IMPAC Dublin Literature and British Book Award. Born and raised in Nesconset Long Island, New York. Picoult wrote her first story, "Misunderstood Lobster," at the age of 5. She studied writing at Princeton University and graduated in 1987. She published two short stories in Seventeen magazine while in college. After graduating from college, she changed jobs frequently (from editing textbooks to teaching English in eighth grade). She received her Master of Education from Harvard University. Picoult`s novels are mainly focused on portraying human emotions, complex human relationships, and moral dilemmas. Most of her books deal with a criminal or civil event that lasts throughout the book. She is married to Tim Van Leer, whom she met in college. They have three children: Sammy (Samantha), Kylie and Jake. Her family and several pets live in Hanover, New Hampshire. Her book Nineteen Minutes (2006) on the aftermath of a school shooting in a small town became the first on the New York Times bestseller list in 2007.
