Barbara Louise Mertz (English Barbara Louise Mertz ) September 29, 1927 - August 8, 2013 Aliases - Elizabeth Peters (Elizabeth Peters), Barbara Michaels (Barbara Michaels). American writer, archaeologist, Egyptologist. Born September 29, 1927 in a small town in Illinois. At the age of four, she moved with her parents to Chicago. She studied at the University of Chicago (Institute of the East), where she received her master`s degree in 1950. Barbara Mertz is an archaeologist, Egyptologist, professor at the University of Chicago, Ph.D.

(she defended her doctoral dissertation at the age of 23). Author of three scientific monographs - on the history of Egypt (1964, 1978) and Rome (together with her husband, Richard Mertz, 1968). Under the pseudonym Barbara Michaels (Barbara Michaels) since 1966 publishes gothic romantic thrillers. The pseudonym was taken at the suggestion of the publisher to make it easier for the reader to choose between scientific and fiction books of the author. In total, about 30 Gothic novels have been released. In 1968 he began writing detective stories in the style of "cozy" ("cozy" detective) with three serial heroines - archaeologist Amelia Peabody, art critic Vicki Bliss and librarian - Jacqueline Kerby. Books of this genre are published under the pseudonym Elizabeth Peters (Elizabeth Peters), which combines the names of her children. In Russia, Elizabeth Peters` detectives were published by the Phantom Press Publishing House in the "Ironic Detective" series. Mertz was a feminist and often brought up relevant topics both in her fiction and in her professional life. Mertz founded the Malice Domestic, a Washington-based organization for women detective writers. She also founded the Hood College Writing Fellowship. For her fruitful work, Mertz has received a number of awards and nominations, as well as the title of Grand Master of the American Association of Detective Literature. Her first recognition came when her book Trojan Gold was nominated for the 1988 Anthony Award for Best Novel, and the following year, Naked Once More won the Agatha Award.
