Imagine that some people have the power to affect your thoughts and feelings when you read, or they read a book to you. They can seduce you with amazing stories, conjure up vividly imagined worlds, but also manipulate you into thinking exactly what they want you to. When Luca Campelli dies a sudden and violent death, his son Jon inherits his second-hand bookshop, Libri di Luca, in Copenhagen. Jon has not seen his father for twenty years since the mysterious death of his mother. When Luca`s death is followed by an arson attempt on the shop, Jon is forced to explore his family`s past. Unbeknown to Jon, the bookshop has for years been hiding a remarkable secret. It is the meeting place of a society of booklovers and readers, who have maintained a tradition of immense power passed down from the days of the great library of ancient Alexandria. Now someone is trying to destroy them, and Jon finds himself in a fight for his life and those of his new friends.

Mikkel Birkegaard (Dat. Mikkel Birkegaard ) Danish writer, programmer. Born in Copenhagen in 1970. Works as an IT manager. Favorite books include Michael Ende`s The Endless Story, Arturo Perez-Reverte`s Club Dumas. Mikel Birkegaard`s debut novel The Mystery of Libri di Luca immediately became a bestseller in Denmark after its release, and then won the hearts of readers throughout Europe. After the resounding success of his first book, he did not quit his job, and devotes 3 days a week to it, the rest of the time he writes. “I can`t imagine myself as a professional writer. A writer works alone, and I need to communicate with people. I think that the current situation gives me a harmonious balance in life,” he says.  Dangerous Liaisons - interview, June 2010 In an interview a Dane who visited Russia for the first time to participate in the Moscow Open Book Festival , talks about working as a programmer, a sensational bestseller and his creative plans.  - Did you like Moscow? - Very much! This is a huge city, and there is a lot of traffic and very interesting architecture. I like it.  - You are a professional programmer What brought you to literature? - At first, working in IT also seemed creative to me. After all, computer programs can also be viewed as small stories, each with its own plot. But after a few years I got tired of programming, and I started writing stories.  - Was it easy to publish the novel? - I spent almost five years to publish my book. It was difficult, but I was motivated by the need to find expression for myself in creativity.  - Have you ever thought about leaving computers altogether and becoming a professional writer? - No. Firstly, being a programmer in Denmark is a stable and good income. Second, that these two activities go well together. When I program, I use logic, that is, I use the right hemisphere of the brain, and when I write, I do creativity, and this is already the left hemisphere. Great balance, isn`t it?  - The theme of the mystical power of books over people has become very popular in modern literature. Why do you think? - When a person reads about it and likes the book, a very strong bond develops between the book and the reader. Therefore, such books quickly find their addressee. I myself like to read books about books and mysticism. This is a great topic to start your literary career with. Plus, it returns value to the book as an object. Today it is possible to read books from a laptop or from a mobile phone, but I think that books still retain their appeal. Because there is a story in the book, which is a plot, and there is also a story about the book itself as a thing. How did you receive the book, was it a gift, where did you read it, how you were. I am very attracted to this extra layer - little stories about the book in addition to its plot.  - The Italian language plays a significant role in the book, the Italian origin of the protagonist and his father. What explains such attention to this culture? - I needed the main character and his father to come from a country with a bright literary past. I don`t find this in Denmark. We had many famous writers, but I needed something more. Plus, my best friend is half Italian on my father`s side. I spend a lot of time with them and I think that Italian men are very nice to themselves.  - Can you remotely get full access to someone else`s computer, like one of the heroes of your novel? - I - I can`t.  - But what is described in the book is generally possible? - I think so. I am not an expert in hacking, but it is for sure possible.  - Meanwhile, your second book has already been published in Denmark. - Right.  - Tell us a little about her. - My second book in English is called "Over my dead body". It was published in Denmark last year, and this summer in Holland and Italy. The main character is the author of thrillers. He writes completely monstrous stories about nightmarish murderers. Over the years, he has written about ten books. He is more and more distant from other people, and begins to write a new book alone in a country house in the north of Denmark. And suddenly he finds out that in a neighboring village a woman was drowned in a creek exactly as described in his last book, which has not yet been published. Of course, he begins to figure out who kills people according to the descriptions in his book. He is getting closer and closer to the solution and at the same time he understands his past more and more.  - Have you ever wanted to write not an action-packed, but for example a social novel? - I try to write stories that I myself would want to read. So I’m unlikely to write a novel about society.
