A book by Evan Hunter (Ed McBain)

Evan Hunter (Evan, English Evan Hunter ,), birth name - Salvatore Albert Lombino ( Salvatore Albert Lombino [/ i ]), also widely known under the pseudonym Ed McBain ( Ed McBain ) October 15, 1926, New York - July 6, 2005, Weston American writer, screenwriter, author of police novels.  Complete list of literary aliases : SA Lombino, John Abbot, Curt Cannon, Hunt Collins, Ed McBain, Richard Marsten, Craig Rice, Ezra Hannon, Evan Hunter, Ted Taine, DA Addams, Dean Hudson (Dean Hudson).  Biography The future writer was born in New York into a family of Italian immigrants and at birth received the name Salvatore Albert Lombino. He graduated from Evander Child High School. During World War II he served in the Navy, on a destroyer in the Pacific Ocean. During the service he wrote several stories. After the war, he returned to New York and entered Hunter College. He published a weekly column in the college newspaper. Changed several jobs. Seventeen days in September 1950 he was a teacher at school and later used this experience when writing the novel "The Blackboard Jungle" (The Blackboard Jungle, 1954). In 1951 he became a literary agent, editor, and worked with authors such as Arthur Clarke, Paul William Anderson, and Pal Granville Woodhouse. In the same year, it was first published, and the science fiction story "Welcome, Martians" became its debut. This story was signed by “S. A.

Lombino ". After that, the writer published under the pseudonyms Evan Hunter and Hunt Collins. The first pseudonym was made up of the names of two educational institutions: Evander Child and Hunter College (although he never officially recognized this). In May 1952, he officially changed his name and became Evan Hunter - after the editor told him that with an Italian name, his works would not sell well. As Evan Hunter, he published School Jungle. In order not to spoil the reputation of a serious writer, Hunter published detective novels under pseudonyms: Kurt Cannon, Hunt Collins, Richard Marsten and others.

His most famous pseudonym, Ed McBain, appeared in 1956, when the novel Cop Hater was released. It was the first novel in the cycle about the 87th police station, which is located in a fictional city reminiscent of New York (this becomes completely clear when the author is forgotten and calls him that in a couple of works of the cycle). Here the detective Steve Carella and his colleagues first appeared, who will become recurrent characters in the cycle for more than fifty books: "The Mugger" (The Mugger, 1956), "Wedge" (Killer`s Wedge, 1959), "The Price of Doubt" (He Who Hesitates, 1965), "Weekdays" (Hail, Hail, the Gangs All Here; 1971), etc.

Already in 1958, Hunter admitted that McBain was him, but he continued to sign detective stories like that, including a cycle about lawyer Matthew Hope ... The novels of this cycle bore the names of famous fairy tales: "Goldilocks" (Goldilocks, 1977), "Rumplestiltskin" (Rumplestiltskin, 1981), "Beauty and the Beast" (Beauty and the Beast, 1982), etc.

Some works published in the 50s years under various pseudonyms, were later published under the pseudonym Ed McBain. He published serious prose under his real name: novels - "Young Savages" (A Matter of Conviction, 1959), "Winter is Coming" (Come Winter, 1973), numerous scripts, such as the script for Alfred Hitchcock`s film "Birds" (1963). About working with the director, he left an ironic memoir "Me and Hitch" (Me and Hitch, 1997). Hunter`s works served as the basis for 41 films, incl. TV series about the 87th police station. After 1960, he used pseudonyms twice besides McBain. The novel Royal Flush (Doors, 1975) was signed by the name of Ezra Hannon, and the novel "Scimitar" (1992) - by the name of John Abbott. In addition, it became known that for the publishing house William Hamling`s in the period from 1961 to 1969 he wrote a large number of pornographic works under the pseudonym Dean Hudson (Dean Hudson). In 2000, the novel "Candyland" was published, the first part of which was published under the name Evan Hunter, and the second - under the name of Ed McBain. In 2002, the writer was diagnosed with throat cancer. Evan Hunter died in 2005 in Weston, Connecticut. Until the very last day he continued to write, the last book on the 87th precinct was published after his death. Official site - http://www.edmcbain.com/ Wikipedia , Wikipedia (en.) , Bibliography (Russian) , IMDb .  Bibliography aka SA Lombino - С. A.
