Cádiz, 1811: The Spanish port city has been surrounded by Napoleon’s army for a year. Their backs to the sea, its residents endure routine bombardments and live in constant fear of a French invasion. And now the bodies of random women have begun to turn up throughout the city—victims of a shadowy killer. Police Comisario Rogelio Tizón has been assigned the case. Known for his razor-sharp investigation skills—as well as his brutal interrogation methods—Tizón has seen everything. Or so he thought. His inquiry into the murders reveals a surprising pattern: Each victim has been found where a French bomb exploded. Logic tells him to pass it off as coincidence; his instinct tells him otherwise, and he begins to view Cádiz as a living chessboard, with himself and the killer the main players. In a city pushed to the brink, violence and desperation weave together the lives of a group of unlikely people: the Spanish taxidermist who doubles as a French spy; the young woman who uses her father’s mercantile business to run the enemy blockade; the rough-edged corsair who tries to resist her charms; and the brilliant academic furiously trying to perfect the French army’s artillery and bring Cádiz to its knees once and for all. And as Napoleon presses closer, Tizón must make his next move on the bomb-scarred chessboard before the killer claims another pawn.

A book by Arturo Perez-Reverte

Arturo Pérez-Reverte (Spanish Arturo Pérez-Reverte) Contemporary Spanish writer, a brilliant connoisseur of history and art, master of fine literature, who won the hearts of his readers with novels with fascinating intrigue. His prose is filigree, the themes and plot twists are unexpected. Riddles of past centuries and mysterious crimes coexist with the most pressing problems of our time.  Biography Arturo Perez-Reverte was born on November 24, 1951 in Cartagena (Spain). In his youth, he was fond of scuba diving, now he has become an inveterate yachtsman ("Real freedom begins 10 miles from the coast"). From his father he inherited a love of travel, from his grandfather - a library of five thousand volumes. As a child, I read all the adventure and classical literature that I could reach. Then his favorite hero was Robinson Crusoe, whom the writer now finds disgusting ("What did Robinson do when he met another man? Turned him into a servant"). However, erudition did not save Arturo from being expelled from school for hitting the priest. In the 1970s, he worked for an oil tanker, then became a journalist. As a war correspondent for the daily Pueblo, he has traveled to several African countries, including Western Sahara and Equatorial Guinea. He was reported missing twice - in the Sahara in 1975 and in Eritrea in 1977. He worked as a military TV correspondent for RTVE, reporting from Cyprus, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Chad, Lebanon, Sudan, Mozambique, Angola, from the Persian Gulf and Bosnia. Then he switched mainly to fiction, but still acts as a columnist (in particular, in "El Semanal"). Journalist, soldier, mystic, grandmaster, sailor, bookseller, aristocrat, hacker, pirate, detective, adventurer - all this is Arturo Perez-Reverte. Filibuster of literature, he does not play a role, does not put on masks. Each book is the result of his own life experience. This Don Quixote of contemporary Spanish literature is ready to battle the windmills of banality for the miracle of graceful intrigue. He has absorbed the leisurely wisdom of the twentieth century and teaches it to the computer speeds of the twenty-first century. His books are the territory of the new millennium, a postmodern constructor, a coordinate system of human culture. Arturo Perez-Reverte is a Renaissance man, an eternal wanderer through the book seas, accidentally stuck to the shores of our era. His readers are very lucky - the writer knows many stories, exciting and creepy, touching and absurd. He will tell us about what we ourselves cannot even imagine, because the geography of his imagination knows no boundaries, and he knows how to tell. Arturo Perez-Reverte has worked as a war reporter for the Pueblo newspaper and for television for over twenty years since 1971. He covered military conflicts in Cyprus, Lebanon, Western Sahara, Libya, Mozambique, Angola, Yugoslavia and other countries. The first novel "Hussar", which takes place during the Napoleonic Wars, was published in 1986. Success came in 1990, after the publication of the novel "Flemish Plaque", the protagonists of which are investigating a murder that happened in the 15th century. World fame, including among Russian-speaking writers, came with the release in 1990 of the novel "Flemish Board", which is considered one of the best examples of an intellectual detective story. Arturo Perez-Reverte lives in La Navata (near Madrid) and in his native Cartagena, where he has the opportunity to travel on a yacht in the Mediterranean. Since 2003 he has been a member of the Spanish Royal Academy.  Bibliography Novels 1986 El húsar - Hussar 1988 El maestro de esgrima - Fencing teacher 1990 La tabla de Flandes - Flemish board 1993 El club Dumas - Club Dumas, or Shadow Richelieu 1993 La sombra del águila) - Shadow of an eagle 1994 Territorio comanche - Comanche territory 1995 Cachito (un asunto de honor - A matter of honor 1995 La piel del tambor - Drum skin, or Seville communion 2000 La carta esférica - Map of the heavenly sphere, or Secret meridian 2002 La reina del sur - Queen of the South 2004 Cabo Trafalgar - Cape Trafalgar 2006 El pintor de batallas - Batalist 2007 Un Día de Cólera - Day of Wrath 2010 El asedio - Siege or Chess with Death 2012 El tango de la guardia vieja - Old Guard Tango 2013 El francotirador paciente - Patient Sniper 2015 buenos - Good people The Adventures of Captain Alatriste Cycle 1996 El capitán Alatriste - Captain Alatriste 1997 Limpieza de sangre - Pure Blood 1998 El sol de Breda - Spanish Fury 2000 El oro del rey - King`s Gold 2003 El caballero del jubón amarillo - Cavalier in a yellow jacket 2006 Corsarios de Levante - Corsairs of the Levant 2011 El puente de los asesinos - Assassins` Bridge Documentary 1995 Obra breve— 1998 Patente de corso - Corsair patent 2001 Con ánimo de ofender - With the intention of offending me cogeréis vivo - You won`t take it alive Official website: http://www.capitanalatriste.com, http://www.perez-reverte.com/
