Robert Silverberg Books

Robert Silverberg (born January 15, 1935, Brooklyn, New York, USA) is a prolific American author best known for his Hugo and Nebula award-winning sci-fi works. Silverberg, himself a voracious reader since childhood, began publishing his stories in science fiction magazines very early on. He graduated from Columbia University with a BA in English Literature in 1956, but continued to write fiction. His first novel published was a children`s book, Uprising on Alpha-S (1956), and the following year he received his first Hugo Award for Best Emerging Author. Over the next four years, Silverberg, by his own reckoning, wrote a million words a year for various magazines. In 1959, the science fiction market crashed, and Silverberg turned his writing talent in other directions, from serious history fiction to light pornography. In the mid-1960s, science fiction writers became increasingly literary ambitious. Frederick Paul, then editor of three science fiction magazines, suggested that Silverberg write for one of them. Thanks to this, Silverberg returned to fiction, now paying more attention to the depth and social environment of the characters than was previously the case in his work, as well as adding elements of modernist literature, which he studied at the university. The books he wrote during this period were considered a quantum leap from his previous work. New Silverberg`s first book is Open Skies, a collection of short stories published by Paul in Galaxy magazine. In the book, a new religion allows people to reach the stars. This was followed by Down to Earth, arguably the first postcolonial science fiction book, in which the former Earth administration of an alien world returns to Earth after an alien planet was liberated. Other popular works from this period include the novels “Living Again”, in which the personality of the dead could be transferred; “The world from within”, a look at the overpopulated world of the future; and Dying From Within, the story of a telepathic whose gift is inevitably weakening. In 1969 his Night Wings won the Hugo Award for Best Novel. In 1970 he received the Nebula Prize for the short story The Passengers, two in 1971 for the novel Time to Change and the short story Good News from the Vatican. In 1975 and 1986, the Nebula Prize for Best Novel was given to him Born with the Dead and Heading for Byzantium. In 1990, Silverberg received the Hugo Award for the short story “Become a Soldier,” and in 2004 he was named Grand Master by the American Science Fiction Association. In 1970 he was a guest of honor at the World Science Fiction Convention (Mirkone). In 1975, Silverberg moved away from science fiction, citing fatigue after years of hard and fruitful work. But in 1980 he returned with his novel Lord Valentine`s Castle (The World of Majipur). The author continues to write science fiction novels today, living in Oakland, California. In terms of the total number of works written by him among science fiction writers, he is second only to Isaac Asimov, having written more than 100 science fiction and more than 60 popular science books. [collapse collapsed title = Bibliography
